A Tale of Two Rings
Sunday, 2006 April 2 - 11:15 am
It was the worst of rings, it was the best of rings...

So here's the saga of Amy's engagement ring. I can finally tell the story now that it's done.

I first got Amy's engagement ring over the Internet. eBay, actually. I bought it from a jewelry wholesaler in New York with a good reputation. I did a lot of research, asked a lot of questions, and I thought I was getting a really nice ring at a really good price.

When the ring arrived, it was beautiful, but it wasn't quite what I expected, in terms of the quality of the center diamond. I mean, I know a little bit about diamonds. I'm certainly no expert, but I can certainly tell the difference between SI-2 and and I-1 clarity. But still, we liked the ring, and of course we had a lot of sentimental attachment to what the ring meant. Amy said, "You've marked me. You've put your stink on me." And from that point, the ring was known as The Stink.

So we went to get The Stink appraised, and you might remember what an unpleasant experience we had with THAT. But the appraisal confirmed what we already suspected: although we got a pretty reasonable price on the ring, it wasn't the fabulous deal that we thought we'd gotten. So after a lot of hemming and hawing over what to do, we figured we'd ask the seller for a refund.

The seller was very nice. He said that the appraisal they had received from an independent laboratory appeared to be wrong, and he agreed with the fact that the ring was incorrectly advertised. He offered to try to find a replacement diamond that matched the original advertised specifications, so we let him go off and do that. But after a few days, he discovered that such a diamond would be double the cost of the diamond we wanted, and he wasn't willing to just give us a diamond like that at the original selling price. That irked me a little bit, because as an experienced jewelry wholesaler, shouldn't he have been somewhat suspicious of the appraisal and the price from the beginning?

So we said no thanks. We're getting a refund.

Yesterday we went to Ross Simons at Southpoint Mall, where we'd looked at rings before. There was a particular ring we had in mind and we figured we'd go take a look at that one again. But when got there, we found they'd just brought in some new rings, and ooooh, there was a beautiful ring with a canary yellow diamond, with the kind of setting we wanted... and, I must say, the price was pretty reasonable. And though I hadn't originally intended to close the deal right away, Amy and I just knew that this was the ring we needed to get. So we bought the ring from our new best friend, Stacy Gee, who was just so helpful and friendly and nice that I wanted to put her in a bunny costume and give her a big giant hug.

Amy felt like the ring wielded power, like The Force. So this ring is now called The Force.

Here are some pictures. The Stink is on the left, and The Force is on the right.

Beautiful! And so unique.

(And because right now you're thinking, "Yes, she is," Ken, I know The Force will be with you always.)
