Football Can Just SUCK IT
Saturday, 2005 September 24 - 11:09 pm
Oh, it just sucks being a sports fan sometimes.

Michigan (my alma mater) lost a heartbreaker to Wisconsin in the final minute of today's football game. North Carolina State (which has become my adopted home school) lost to archrival North Carolina thanks to a series of costly mistakes.

In Michigan's case, the team played pretty well. They outgained Wisconsin on offense, but just failed to capitalize on opportunities. It's maddening because there's clearly so much potential on the Michigan team, but it just goes unrealized. And so just like that, Michigan goes from being a national championship contender to being a major bowl hopeful. And next week, they have to play Michigan State, which has been an offensive buzz-saw all year.

In NC State's case, they just kill themselves with penalties and turnovers. It's a team loaded with athletic talent, but they're not well-coached. Coach Chuck Amato has made changes in the coaching staff recently, but I don't know if they've helped. If I were coaching the team, I'd be lining them up through one tedious drill after another, making sure that things like illegal formation and false start penalties simply don't happen. And a personal foul penalty for bumping an official? That should get you benched for the season.

I've always been impressed with the resilience of NC State fans. In both football and basketball, the fans have endured years and years of mediocrity; yet they remain loyal and true. There's always a hope that one day, the team will have that breakthrough: the one season that vaults them into the upper echelon. And though many years have passed and that hasn't happened, hope springs eternal.

It's kind of different being a Michigan fan. Every year, expectations are high; and when disappointment comes, it's always a bitter shock. We don't wonder what has to change in order for us to become better; we wonder how in the world we, the "leaders and best", don't win EVERY game.

But on days like today, losing is losing, and it sucks either way.

Ugh...this is killing me. You got it exactly right. There is so much talent on that Michigan team and yet things like this happen.
