Catching Up
Wednesday, 2005 December 21 - 8:42 am
... on some news and stuff.

In New York City, a strike by mass transit workers has entered its second day, fouling travel for millions of commuters and holiday visitors. Ugh. I suppose one could look on the bright side, though: everyone has a brilliant excuse for being late or absent from work.

"It's a form of terrorism, if you ask me," said Maria Negron, a commuter walking across a bridge to Manhattan. Yeah, because having to actually WALK somewhere is SO MUCH like three thousand people dying in flames. Come on, people, yeah, it's a huge menace, but IT IS NOT A FORM OF TERRORISM. Regardless of whether you agree with the striking workers or not, it's not fair to label them "terrorists".

A judge in Pennsylvania has ruled that a public school district cannot promote "intelligent design" in biology classes, giving me hope that there is some sense in this world. He noted: "It is ironic that several of [the school board members], who so staunchly and proudly touted their religious convictions in public, would time and again lie to cover their tracks and disguise the real purpose behind the ID Policy." He also described the school board policy as "breathtaking inanity". Brilliant.

A former school board member, William Buckingham, criticized the ruling, saying: "I'm still waiting for a judge or anyone to show me anywhere in the Constitution where there's a separation of church and state." Buckingham now lives in Mount Airy, North Carolina. This tells me two things: (1) school board members are not necessarily familiar with the First Amendment; and (2) the press just loves it when a moronic statement comes out of someone in North Carolina.

Speaking of North Carolina, we're now apparently going to get the Powerball multi-state lottery here by July. Ah, my retirement plan is starting to come together.

Seriously, this is a relief. When North Carolina first talked about getting a lottery, they only talked about scratch-off and other small-jackpot games. There's no way the lottery would have generated enough revenue to be worthwhile with that approach. Multi-state is the only way to go.

Our old pal George Bush is under increasing scrutiny for authorizing secret wiretaps on Americans without court-issued warrants. He defends the practice as legal, saying the emergency powers granted to him by Congress allow him to do so. He also says it's NOT an exercised in "unchecked" presidential power. There's no indication on whether or not Bush was in North Carolina at the time he made these statements.

Nobody seems to be saying the word "impeachment" yet, but shouldn't it be raised as a possibility? This seems just a LITTLE BIT worse than getting a blowjob in the Oval Office.

Don't be too hard on William Buckingham. He is recovering from an Oxycontin addiction. What is it with these conversatives and the pills?

Things like the NYC reaction and the Buckingham statement should make me feel worse as people, but in reality, it enhances my self esteem and makes me feel so much more superior knowing those people are out there. :)

And as for impeachement...I always thought it was a good idea until someone pointed these two words out to me: President Cheney.

Seems like the Bushes know exactly how to pick a VP in order to ensure they stay in office....
