Television: Idol Update, Week 1, Part 1
Thursday, 2006 February 23 - 8:27 am
Ranking the first week's performances. Part 1: The Women.

First of all, did anyone else think Paula Abdul looked like Dr. Zaius from "Planet of the Apes" on Tuesday?

THE WOMEN:

Paris Bennett: 9/10.
Energetic, charismatic. A little soft on the low register, and the dancing might have run into her singing. But a very polished and entertaining performance.

Ayla Brown: 8/10.
Surprisingly good. An ambitious song (Christina Aguilera); she missed the highest notes, but was otherwise good. Cleaned up her look too.

Kellie Pickler: 7/10.
A few nervous pitch issues early; she has trouble with the softer parts, but really good on the power parts. And dang, she's adorable.

Mandisa: 7/10.
Picked a good song, sang energetically. She's personable. A little sharp in a few places.

Katharine McPhee: 7/10.Kinda average-looking. Started well, stayed dead on-key. A few soft spots, but a good performance.

Kinnik Sky: 6/10.
Started well. She's got a weird voice, and there's one or two very weird notes. She got lips like she's Mick Jagger's love child. Finished strong.

Lisa Tucker: 6/10.
She's got a good voice and a good personality. Good song choice. Missed a couple of notes here and there.

Stevie Scott: 5/10.
Started well, but going up to the soprano killed the song's energy. A little lackluster. Oh, and what was with that lipstick?

Becky O'Donohue: 4/10.
Started okay, got a little pitchy; not a good song choice. But she's pretty (she did a a spread on Maxim a couple of years ago that's now making news).

Melissa McGhee: 3/10.
She's got a Bonnie Tyler kind of voice, but not as strong. Also very karaoke-ish. Pitchy.

Brenna Gethers: 2/10.
She's arrogant, and her off-key singing doesn't back up that arrogance. Dull song too.

Heather Cox: 1/10.
Just awful; like bad out-of-tune karaoke. She might want to switch to a porn career and name herself "Sux".

First person out: Becky. She takes it well.

Stevie is out. Poor girl, she's sweet... just no personality. And no power voice.

Becky and her identical twin have been everywhere except the Playboy mansion (which would be next if they found some blonde hair dye). I think she'll do fine.
