More Bush/Iraq nonsense. In Bush's weekly radio address, he used 9/11 to justify the Iraq war. AGAIN. As if we might believe it this time. As if we've become even more stupid than we were when we elected him. Meanwhile, Senator Chuck Hagel is becoming more and more vocal in his criticism of the war. Now, where was this guy during the 2004 campaign? It strikes me as just a little convenient that he's starting to criticize the war just as polls are showing that Americans are increasingly against it... AND when he's starting to ramp up a possible presidential campaign. HUH. The Army is making plans for remaining in Iraq for another four years, with over 100,000 troops. While this might be a "worst-case" scenario, the fact that this plan exists seems to make it clear that we in fact do not have a clear exit-strategy. I still want to ask Bush one question and get a straight answer: if you can't give us a timetable for leaving Iraq, can you at least give us clearly defined criteria? "When the mission is done" isn't something we can measure, nor is "when the Iraqis can defend themselves". How will you know when the Iraqis can defend themselves? And if that's something measurable, then why can't we put a timetable on it? Maybe that's what Cindy Sheehan wants to ask Bush. You know, I wholeheartedly support Sheehan and her protest. And it's pretty amazing to see all the folks who've rallied around her. But now Joan Baez is going to perform a concert there. Um, what? When did this thing turn into a music festival? I hope it doesn't get so out of hand that we forget there's a simple and powerful message from a grieving mother. |

Ken, we are never leaving Iraq. There is not scenario in which we can leave. Otherwise it reverts to what it was before, or worse becomes a theocracy. So we are there for the next 30 years at least. Maybe it will be like Germany eventually, where the troops just kind of hang out |
