So, Uh, What?

Drunken blogging during the State of the Union Address... good times.

The quote of the evening from Amy last night, as we were live-blogging the State of the Union address:

"We need to snow babies that Cheney does not eat with love, on Girls Gone Wild videos VIA the Bush Twins." I have no idea what that means, but I do know Amy typed it very carefully, so it must be important. And she made sure to capitalize VIA.

So yeah, the State of the Union Drinking Game was much more successful than we anticipated; we were pretty drunk after just a few minutes of the speech. And when NU-CU-LAR came up more than once, we definitely hit the tipping point.

But it's a good thing we did get drunk, because the speech would have been insanely irritating without the soothing numbness of alcohol. Reduce our dependence on oil? Improve the tone of debate in Washington? Yeah, right. Why don't you start by not using half your speech for campaign rhetoric, with not-so-subtle digs at your Democratic critics? I should have added "defeatist", "second-guessing", "retreat", and "surrender" to the drinking list. Or maybe I should have had a drinking game of words that would not be included, like "compromise", "middle ground", and "I was wrong".

Actually, the drinking game should have been based on "BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH", because that's mostly what I heard.

Two things I found out afterwards:

- That dog that was sitting in the VIP section? It was a bomb-sniffing dog.
- Cindy Sheehan, the famed protesting mom, was tossed out of the gallery before the speech started, for wearing a shirt with an anti-war slogan on it.

Now, no more drinking... until tonight.

Oh come on, the S.O.T.U. speech is just political theatre. It's about as useless and pointless as campaign speeches. Everyone knows I loved me some Bill Clinton, I don't care how many interns sucked his wang, but he didn't say one thing different or memorable eight years in a row. I think you're drinking game was the perfect approach to this absurd tradition (absurd for both parties - no matter what year).

I found this on Anderson Coopers blog (CNN), I couldn't agree more and thought you might find it amusing:

"Now, I know that there are plenty of Democrats and Republicans who really want to help with the serious work of the nation: Spurring the economy, supporting families, protecting our security. But these Super Bowl political events, such as the State of the Union address, are really about policy second, putting on a show first.

So I thought, let's go through all the moments of the speech and give out some awards, just like we do for movies.

Best Actor: Senator Bill Frist acting like he wasn't using every moment in front of the camera to campaign for his own presidency.

Worst Actress: Hillary Clinton trying to force a smile after President Bush invoked the name of her husband in a bid for Democratic applause.

Best Drama: Samuel Alito's agonizing struggle over whether or not to clap.

Best Direction: Mindless lockstep of Reds and Blues cheering or grousing on cue.

Best Walk-On: Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco...a not so subtle reminder that big problems remain in the Deep South.

Worst Walk-Off: Anti-war protestor Cindy Sheehan. She got herself into the chamber, but then got thrown out for revealing her antiwar t-shirt before the president even arrived. Talk about missing your cue.

Best Supporting Actress: Laura Bush. Who can argue?

Best Comedy: Dave Chappelle. No, he wasn't there, but it sure would have been funny.

Best Picture: OK, no kidding here. The family of Marine Staff Sergeant Dan Clay, who was killed in Iraq, displayed dignity, bravery and respect in a room full of political posturing. By far, their appearance was the most compelling moment of the night."
