Joining the TiVo Nation
Sunday, 2005 September 18 - 7:34 pm
Yes, I'm finally getting a TiVo.

I've resisted getting a TiVo for a long time. Some of you may remember that I've experimented with making my own Macintosh-based DVR. I ultimately abandoned that because it didn't work very well. I've also attempted to get Time Warner's DVR, but I've never managed to catch them when the high-definition units were available. But now the fall TV season is upon us, and I don't know how regularly I'll be able to be able to watch my shows. So I need something, and my aging VCR just isn't cutting it. Plus, TiVo is offering a $150 rebate on their boxes, making their 40-hour box cost just $50. So I'm going ahead and taking the plunge.

I've determined that, except for the fact that it's not high-definition, TiVo gives me just about all I want. It's relatively easy to use. I can schedule recordings from the Internet. And I can transfer recordings to DVD (with a little bit of finagling).

I'm not terribly thrilled about paying a $12.95 monthly fee, but I guess it's worth it. And yeah, I know about the $299 "lifetime" option... except, that's the lifetime of the box that I buy, not MY lifetime. Pretty sneaky, sis. What are the odds I'll be using the same DVR three years from now?

TiVo owners all say that it's changed their TV-watching habits. I can see how that would happen. But I think there'll always be a part of me that wants to just channel-surf. For me, sometimes I don't set out to watch a particular show; I just browse and wait for something to catch my eye. I think I get exposed to a lot more new stuff that way. I still want the spontaneity and variety of live TV-watching.

But we'll see. In a few months I may be singing a different tune.

Nope, John, I don't have one either. Cause I'm a cheap bastard. ;)

I don't have one, either, John. I don't even have cable. So, you're not the only one.
