German Elections | Sunday, 2005 September 18 - 7:56 pm |
How many Americans even KNOW there were elections in Germany today? Just to highlight some differences between the United States and Europe: in today's elections in Germany, the voter turnout was 77.7%. And it's possible that Angela Merkel may become Germany's first female chancellor. Gah, if only voters in this country were as involved... and as open-minded. If you asked five people what they thought of Hillary Clinton, it's almost certain the word "bitch" would come up, simply because Hillary is a strong-willed woman. Note that there is no corresponding derogatory word for strong-willed men. Hillary is probably the leading hypothetical Democratic presidential candidate right now. But I fear that she's unelectable in this country. That's unfortunate, because she's intelligent, she's forward-thinking, and she's a consensus-builder. Those are qualities seriously lacking in our current administration. Sigh. The 2008 elections seem so far away. |
