The Wasted Channel? | Wednesday, 2006 January 25 - 11:21 pm |
Briefly: UPN and the WB are going to merge. This week it was announced that two smaller television networks, UPN and The WB, were going to merge to form a single network called "The CW". The "C" stands for CBS, and the "W" stands for Warner: CBS and Time Warner are the owners of UPN and The WB. First of all, why is it The CW? I don't like when organizations put "The" in front of their name to make themselves seem more important. If I called myself "THE Ken", wouldn't that seem just a little bit pretentious? Kind of like when those damn Buckeyes call it "THE Ohio State University", like anyone thought there might be more than one of them. And "CW"? That's the best they could do? I'm imagining a room full of guys discussing this idea. WARNER: So, we're Time Warner, and you're CBS. Hey, maybe we could take one letter from each of our names to form the new name. CBS: What, "WC"? Wow, that's brilliant. Okay, time for lunch. And bonuses for all of us. WARNER: Wait, I was thinking maybe we should go with "CW". CBS: I dunno, "WC" would probably more accurately describe the bulk of our new network's programming content. WARNER: True dat. CBS: And if you try to say "CW", you end up saying "COW". WARNER: Would it be better if we put "THE" in front of it? CBS: "THE COW." I like that. WARNER: Then again, having a Cow go up against a Fox seems like a bad idea, from a food-chain perspective. CBS: Okay, fine, we'll make sure to pronounce it "theeee seeeee dubba-you" to make it as un-cowlike as possible. Satisfied? WARNER: Works for me. What was that about lunch? One last thought: what's going to happen to our local WB and UPN affiliates? Certainly we don't need to have TWO channels showing The COW. That would really make it the Wasted Channel. |

I'm sad to see our local WB affiliate go away because that will most likely be the end of Simpsons reruns every night. *sniff sniff* In our market, they are doing away with the individual affiliates and putting THE COW on a new channel. Most likely without Simpsons reruns, those bastards. |
