American Idol 2008 Week 1: The Girls
Wednesday, 2008 February 20 - 9:57 pm
They're "in it to win it", says Ryan.

Kristy Lee Cook: 4.0
She, uh, sold her horse to get here. "Rescue Me", with kind of a country spin. A little bland, a little safe. And what's with the crazy eyes? Yawn. She's got the flu and bronchitis; that's something of an excuse, I guess. I give her a 4.

Joanne Borgella: 6.0
"Say a Little Prayer". A little trouble with low notes, but mostly nice. It's an unexpected song choice for her, and that's a good thing. It's a little safe, but not bad. I give her an 6.

Alaina Whitaker: 6.0
"More Today Than Yesterday". Pretty nice start. She's not doing too much with it; it's a little bit cabaret, but she's hitting it. I give her a 6.

Amanda Overmyer: 5.0
A little scat to start... not really impressive. "Baby Please Don't Go". Not really a singer's song; kinda shouty and atonal. She's definitely got a stage presence, and she's unique, but, meh, I just don't know... I was expecting more. I give her a 5.

Amy Davis: 2.0
"Where the Boys Are". Very pitchy. And verrrry old. It's almost like she wants to go home. I give her a 2.

Brooke White: 2.0
"Happy Together". Sounds nervous; lots of pitch problems. And her movements are just weird. It's bad karaoke. I give her a 2.

Alexandrea Lushington: 8.0
"Spinning Wheel". A risky song, and it works. She nailed the opening, and is actually making this sound current. Great look. Slightly pitchy on a couple of notes, but she's the best so far. I give her an 8.

Kady Malloy: 6.0
"Groovy Kind of Love". Strong vocal, but this is kind of a boring arrangement. Still, she's showing some potential here. I give her a 6.

Asia'h Epperson: 9.0
"Take Another Little Piece of My Heart". Interesting. She's the first to put the vocal and performance together. She seemed natural and confident. Very nice. I give her a 9.

Ramiele Malubay: 7.0
"You Don't Have to Say You Love Me". She continues to surprise by pulling out throaty, big songs. This is Dusty Springfield. Decent start, a couple of pitchy notes. It's good, but I'm not sure I get her whole vibe yet. I give her an 7.

Syesha Mercado: 8.0
"Tobacco Road". I'm not sure this is the best song choice for her. She's a good singer and she can hit the big notes, but I think we'll see better from her in the future. I give her an 8.

Carly Smithson: 5.0
What's this song? "The Shadow of Your Smile", hmm. It's very old fashioned. She definitely has a strong voice (especially considering that she also has bronchitis), but I don't know about this; it's not very memorable. I think there was a pitchy part in there. Hmm. I give her a 5.

Overall: better than the guys, but I'm still expecting better. Come on, people, impress me... you've got big shoes to fill after last year's group. Asia'h was clearly the top performer of the first round overall; everyone else needs to step up.
