American Idol 2008 Week 2: The Girls
Wednesday, 2008 February 27 - 9:48 pm
More of the 70s.

Carly Smithson: 8.0
"Crazy on You". Heart isn't a bad choice for her. She's doing a pretty nice job here... clear and on key, and an okay performance too. She hit the big notes. I give her an 8. Amy gives her an 8.

Syesha Mercado: 4.0
"Me and Mrs. (I mean Mr.) Jones". This is not a great song choice, I don't think. It's very old-fashioned, and a little pitchy. Ergh. Completely forgettable. I give her a 4. Amy gives her a 4.

Brooke White: 4.0
"You're So Vain". Carly Simon suits her. It starts pretty good; a little pitchy in the lower register. Not bad, but a little safe, and not very original. Not a breakout performance, that's for sure. I give her a 5. Amy gives her 3.

Ramiele Malubay: 8.5
"Don't Leave Me This Way". You just never expect this from her when you hear her talk. It's soulful, and it's modern-sounding. It's not that challenging for her, but she definitely hit it. I think she'll be popular this week. Judges didn't like it, but I give her a 7. Amy gives her a 10.

Kristy Lee Cook: 6.0
"Baby You're No Good". I don't think she really has the right style for this song... and I don't like the way she moves. Vocally it's not bad; it's on key. But it's not very challenging. I give her a 5. Amy gives her a 7.

Amanda Overmyer: 1.0
"Carry On Wayward Son". The hair is crazy, wow. And her pitch is all over the place. It's really, really, bad. She's trying, but vocally it's just not good at all. A total mess. I give her a 2. Amy gives her a 0.

Alaina Whitaker: 4.0
"Hopelessly Devoted to You". Right off the bat, you have to worry about this being too theatrical. And this song has been sung so many times by so many singer, how can you make it new? The low notes are off-key, the high notes are a little shouty, and it's just average. I give her a 4. Amy gives her a 4.

Alexandrea Lushington: 3.5
"The Biggest Part of Me". Well, hmm. It's okay. She's not doing much interesting with it; this song has potential for reinterpretation as an R&B song, but she missed the opportunity. It's pitchy in spots, and pretty boring. I give her a 4. Amy gives her a 3.

Kady Malloy: 0.5
"Magic Man". She's awfully off-key; this is way below her range, and it's hurting her. She's not a rock singer, and she shouldn't try to be one. I don't think she hit one note on key. I give her a 1. Amy gives her a 0.

Asia'h Epperson: 2.5
"All By Myself". She's struggling to find the note at the beginning; it's too low for her, maybe? And then she doesn't hit the soaring section, until the third try. She hits the high note, but it's strained. If you're going to attempt this song, you really have to hit it, and she didn't. She's been sick; is that the reason? I give her a 4. Amy gives her a 1.

My bottom three: Alexandrea Lushington, Kady Malloy, Alaina Whitaker. Carly Smithson might have been the surprise winner of the night.
