Rehnquist Dies
Saturday, 2005 September 3 - 11:40 pm
Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist has died at the age of 80, after battling thyroid cancer.

After leading the Supreme Court's tilt to the right for the last 33 years, William Rehnquist has died, creating what will surely be a contentious vacancy in the Court.

Even as the Senate begins its confirmation hearings for John Roberts, to replace retiring justice Sandra Day O'Connor, talk will turn to whom President Bush might appoint next. Rehnquist was a staunch conservative; will Bush attempt to replace him with someone similar, even in light of his weakened political leverage? If so, Democrats are almost certain to launch a filibuster.

But if Bush instead selects a moderate, the net effect of his two SCOTUS appointments might be to slant the court more to the left. That'd be an interesting bit of irony. Bush might feel pressure to select a female or minority candidate, like Alberto Gonzalez or Edith Clement. The radical right just might have a heart attack if that happens.

This is gonna be interesting.
